If you’re coming to Lisbon, come hungry. These are the essentials.
1. Pastéis de Nata
Creamy, flaky, slightly caramelised, you already know them. Eat them warm, sprinkle with cinnamon, and pair with espresso. Manteigaria and Pastelaria de Santo António are solid bets.

The original version, made from a secret recipe since 1837. Yes, there’s a queue. Yes, it’s worth it.

3. Bacalhau (in all forms)
Portugal takes cod seriously. Try:
Pastéis de bacalhau
Bacalhau à Brás
Bacalhau com natas
You’ll see it everywhere, and for good reason.

4. Bifanas
Thin pork slices cooked in garlic and wine, served in bread. Cheap, messy, and delicious. Go to Trevo or Bifanas do Afonso.

5. Grilled fish
Lisbon keeps it simple: fresh fish, salt, charcoal. Sardines, sea bass, dourada, especially good in summer, but available year-round.
If you want to taste these dishes in the right places, with context and local insight, our food tours are designed exactly for that, no tourist traps, just good food and real stories.
