Grandma Recipe: Aletria / Sweet noodles

Updated: Mar 13

Have you ever tried sweet noodles?

It might sound unusual, but in Portugal it’s actually a very traditional dessert called Aletria.

You’ll often find it on family tables during the holidays, but honestly it’s good enough to eat all year round. Like most Portuguese recipes, every family has their own version. This one is my grandmother’s:

Ingredients:

Angel hair pasta | Lemon | Cinammon stick | Salt | Milk | Sugar | Eggs | Cinnamon Powder

Steps:

  1. Start by cooking angel hair pasta (200g) in water with lemon peel and a cinnamon stick + add a pinch of salt

  1. Boil milk (1L). Drain the pasta and add it to the milk.

  1. Add sugar to taste (less than 150g). Add egg yolks (6) slowly and mix it so it doesn’t cook.

  1. It’s ready, plate it! And add some cinnamon on top

  1. You can eat it warm or refrigerate and eat the next day

It’s simple, comforting, delicious and incredibly nostalgic. You have to try it!
