Where to eat the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon

Pastéis de nata are everywhere in Lisbon - on every corner, in every café, at every tourist trap.

But just because they're ubiquitous doesn't mean they're all worth your time. Here are the five places you genuinely shouldn't leave Lisbon without trying:

  • Pastelaria de Santo António: my personal favourite. The balance is just right: sweet enough without being too sweet, with a crust that is so crispy!

  • Manteigaria: slightly sweeter and a touch smaller, but the best among locals. It’s also everywhere in the city, so you will be able to enjoy lots of them.

  • Pastéis de Belém: the original, this is the only place that still uses the recipe created by the monks of Jerónimos Monastery back in 1837. Non-negotiable, you have to try it.

  • Pastelinho de Benfica: a true hidden gem. Locals only, just exceptionally good pastéis de nata that speak entirely for themselves.

  • Castro: for the cinnamon lovers. Always warm, always flaky, with just the right hit of spice.
