Croquetes may technically have French origins, but in Portugal they’ve become something completely their own.
They’re part of our culinary DNA, golden, crisp, and always welcome whether you’re starting a meal, pairing them with a beer, or sneaking one as a mid-day treat. Every Portuguese person has opinions about croquetes, and every neighbourhood has that one place everyone swears by.
And if you’re like me, you know that a good croquete can tell you everything about a kitchen. The seasoning, the texture, the ratio of meat to creaminess, the crispness of the exterior, it’s an art form disguised as a snack.

Here are some of my favourite spots in Lisbon to enjoy this iconic bite:
If croquettes had a royal court, Gambrinus would be its palace. This is the most elegant place in Lisbon to order a croquette, freshly fried to order, beautifully seasoned, and served with the kind of old-school charm that makes the experience even better. It’s the croquete equivalent of wearing a suit to dinner.
A Lisbon classic with a Parisian soul. Versailes is the perfect place to sit down for a croquette “meal”, yes, that’s a thing, paired with a simple side salad. It feels timeless, slightly nostalgic, and absolutely delicious.
Califa is one of those traditional spots where the croquettes taste exactly like you want them to: savoury and familiar.
Let’s be honest, my heart belongs mainly to their pastéis de massa tenra, but the croquettes here also rise to the occasion. They’re flavourful, balanced, and worth adding to your snack rotation.
As the name suggests, this is where tradition meets creativity. Casa do Croquete gives the classic croquette a modern twist, expect innovative flavours, updated textures, and a fun reinterpretation of the snack we all know.
The size alone will shock you, in the best way. These croquettes are giants, hearty and generous, but surprisingly well-balanced in flavour. Definitely one to try if you want something a bit different from the usual bite-sized versions.
If you love bold flavour, you’ll love Tico Tico. Their croquettes are made fresh to order and have one of the most distinctive meat seasonings in the city. Unique and intense.
And you, have you ever done a croquette crawl? Lisbon is one of the best cities in the world for it. Try a few and compare textures and flavours.
If you do, let me know which spot won your heart… and your appetite. More Lisbon food explorations are coming right here on the blog! 🍽✨
