If you’re a tea lover like me, Portugal might not be the first place that comes to mind, but Lisbon actually makes it surprisingly easy to explore.
From traditional tea shops to more modern takes, there are some genuinely great spots worth knowing.

Where to buy tea (and take some home)
This is as close as it gets to a proper old-school tea shop in Lisbon. Think shelves lined with tins, the smell of loose-leaf blends in the air, and staff who actually know what they’re talking about. You can take your time, ask questions, and discover something beyond the usual supermarket options. They also carry Portuguese teas, including those from the Azores, which are well worth trying.
Not strictly a tea shop, but a beautifully curated store dedicated to Portuguese products. It’s a great place to pick up Azorean tea in well-designed packaging, ideal if you want something easy to carry or gift. Less about variety, more about presentation and storytelling.

Where to sit down and have tea
If you’re in the mood for a proper afternoon tea experience, this is the polished version. Expect tiered trays, scones, pastries, and a more refined setting. It’s not an everyday stop, more something you plan as an occasion.
Here, tea isn’t really the main event, but that’s kind of the point. This historic café is all about atmosphere. You come for the setting, order tea almost by default, and pair it with traditional pastries. It feels very Lisbon: simple, timeless, and unpretentious.

What to bring home
If you’re visiting Portugal and want a tea-related souvenir, go for Azorean tea. Grown in the Azores, it’s one of the few places in Europe where tea is produced commercially.
It travels well, has a real sense of place behind it, and, unlike most teabags, actually comes with a story.
