A guide to eating out in Portugal (without feeling lost)

Eating out in Portugal is fairly straightforward once you know what you’re looking at, but the names can throw you off at first.

Not every place is just a “restaurant,” and those labels actually tell you a lot about what kind of experience you’re about to have. Here’s a quick way to understand before you even sit down:

Tasca

Small, informal, and usually family-run. This is where you go for straightforward, home-style Portuguese food, nothing fancy, but often very good. Expect handwritten menus, daily dishes, and locals who’ve been coming for years.

Adega

Originally meaning “wine cellar,” today it’s more about the vibe: rustic, traditional, and focused on regional food. Wine matters here, often local and affordable.

Marisqueira

If you like seafood, this is your place. These restaurants specialize in shellfish - clams, prawns, crab, lobster - often served simply, sometimes with garlic, olive oil, and a lot of bread on the side.

Churrasqueira

Casual grill houses, often centered around charcoal cooking. The star is usually grilled chicken (frango assado), but you’ll also find ribs, pork, and other meats. Great for something quick, filling, and inexpensive.

Cervejaria

Despite the name, it’s not just about beer. These are lively spots where you’ll find everything from steak sandwiches (prego) to seafood and hearty plates, always with a cold beer close by.
