5 Portuguese Food Culture Unspoken Rules
Before your next meal out in Lisbon, make sure you know these.
1. Bread is not optional: Portuguese bread love, it starts the day, and it starts the meal. Before your food arrives, you'll almost always be offered a couvert: bread with butter, perhaps some olives or local cheese. A fun bit of recent history: it used to be completely normal for restaurants to simply place bread on the table and charge you for it at the end, whether you'd asked for it or not. A few years ago, a law changed that, restaurants are now legally required to ask before bringing it. Either way, always say yes.

2. Simple food is the point: Don't mistake simplicity for lack of effort. Portuguese cuisine is built on the philosophy of letting great ingredients speak for themselves, a freshly caught fish, grilled over charcoal, finished with good olive oil and sea salt. No heavy sauces, no unnecessary complexity. Just quality, treated with respect. Once you understand that, everything tastes better.

3. Coffee is not something you rush: The Portuguese drink their coffee outside the home, and the ritual is about far more than the espresso itself. It's the conversation, the people-watching, the pause in the middle of the day. Your coffee will arrive quickly; drinking it slowly is entirely the point.

4. Soup comes first, always: Soup in Portugal is not diet food or an after thought it's a proper, respected starter and a staple of daily life. If you see caldo verde (a silky green soup with chorizo) or sopa do dia (soup of the day) on the menu, order it. You won't regret it.

5. Portions are generous so plan accordingly: Traditional Portuguese restaurants are not shy with the plate. Portions are substantial, and at many places you can order a meia dose - a half portion - which is often still plenty for one person. When in doubt, ask your waiter before ordering. Sharing is not just acceptable here, it's encouraged.
